SELENA, BARNEY, DEMI & FRIENDS: Selena Marie Gomez was born in New York City to Mandy Cornet and Ricardo Gomez. At a very young age she tried her hand at acting and met her best friend Demi Lovato while starring on the popular children’s show, Barney & Friends — and the two have been inseparable ever since. In the meantime, in order to appear like the normal family they try to be, the Russo’s keep their magic under wraps and hide the fact that they have a Magic Lair hidden behind a secret door in the kitchen of the sandwich shop their father owns. Selena’s character is the middle child, only girl, and the object of torment by her high school bully, Gigi. Wizards also happens to be the first Disney Channel series that focuses on a Latin-American family, and the Russo’s heritage also hits home for Selena, who like her character, was born to parents of Mexican-Italian decent.
When the teen actress had a filming break from the series she spent time working on the sequel to 2004’s A Cinderella Story with Drew Seeley of High School Musical fame. Selena plays “Mary”, a dancer who is raised by her evil step-mother (and a former pop star) with her equally snobbish step-sisters. When she dances with a famous singer named Joey (Seeley) who has disguised himself as a high school student at the school’s Masquerade “Black and White Ball”, the two romantically connect but when the clock strikes twelve and Mary quickly runs away leaving her Zune behind, it becomes a search for love for Joey.
