The release of the second soundtrack of the WB’s hit series, “One Tree Hill” actually coincided with a storyline that was taking place in fictitious Tree Hill, North Carolina as a project that one of the main characters, Peyton Sawyer, put together along with her birthmother, Ellie Harp. The storyline had the two characters work together to put out a benefit album, with proceeds of said album going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, as Peyton wanted to do something great that would also hit close to home, as her mother was diagnosed, and eventually passed away to breast cancer. The actual soundtrack itself also has partial proceeds going to the NBCF, blurring the lines that separate fiction from reality in the process.

The opening track of the album, “Feeling A Moment” by Feeder, was also the first song heard during the season three premiere, so it fits nicely in that regard. Jack’s Mannequin’s “The Mixed Tape,” which was the soundtrack’s first video release, can essentially be regarded as the defining song on the CD, as it is in itself a very well crafted mixed tape. Mozella’s “Light Years Away, Jimmy Eat World’s “23,” and Strays Don’t Sleep’s “For Blue Skies” all carry great emotional value with them as they have each been heard during some of the more important moments of the series, notably over the last two seasons. Tyler Hilton, known by some fans by his Tree Hill alter ego, Chris Keller, offers an excellent cover of John Waite’s “Missing You.” However, even with all of the great music provided by equally great talent, it is one of Tree Hill’s own that leaves her lasting imprint on the compilation. Haley James Scott (Bethany Joy), and her contribution of “Halo,” hit closer to home than any other for fans of the hit drama, as her song not only holds special meaning in regards to the character’s relationship, but also since she is one of the fan favorites of the series, and fans of hers have relied on the series soundtracks in order to hear her melancholic, yet beautiful voice (With the previous soundtrack offering her duet with Tyler Hilton/Chris Keller).

While supporting a great cause may be reason enough to find comfort in picking up the CD, it doesn’t hurt that this is an original soundtrack for a program that is known to have great music play an integral role over the course of each episode. Whether used as a means to advance a specific scene or to set the perfect mood during the CODA, One Tree Hill has consistently made music a staple of the show, raising the bar of sorts for it’s contemporaries to follow. Further evidence for this is provided as several of the artists on this particular soundtrack having already made guest appearances on the show to perform “live” for the students of Tree Hill High School, and it wouldn’t be hard pressed to expect more to follow suit.

Standout Tracks: Haley James Scott – “Halo”; Feeder – “Feeling A Moment”; Strays Don’t Sleep – “For Blue Skies”; Jack’s Mannequin – “The Mixed Tape”; Jimmy Eat World – “23”.
