Of all of the terms that may be identifiable with blink-182, greatness is often overlooked. That’s not to say that the band hasn’t achieved it, because blink’s greatness is legitimately exemplified in this 17-track collection.

With the band going on an indefinite hiatus in early-2005, Greatest Hits may be blink-182’s swan song of sorts. The anthology, chronologically spanning the successful career of what is arguably the greatest punk band ever, opens with two tracks from Cheshire Cat (1994), followed by two from Dude Ranch (1997), three from Enema of The State (1999), one from the band’s sole live album, The Mark, Tom and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back), three from Take Off Your Pants & Jacket (2001), and four from blink-182 (2003). The album closes with two bonus tracks which were previously unreleased in the US.

All of the major radio hits, such as “All The Small Things,” “First Date,” and “I Miss You,” are here, as well as the key notable tracks that saw the band transcend their own greatness, such as “Adam’s Song,” “Stay Together For The Kids,” and “Down.” Of course, the best “joke” song that saw the band recklessly cross lines, “What’s My Age Again,” is here as well as the anthemic “Feeling This.” However, there are notable favorites such as Aliens Exist, Mutt, Roller Coaster, and Lemmings that all deserve a place on Greatest Hits, yet are no where to be found on the single-disc compilation.

As is expected with any greatest hits album, most of the hardcore fans will already have the albums from which these songs were originally heard. However, the casual fans will, for the most part, find all of their favorite blink titles in one definitive collection, and ultimately, completists will be pleased with the two bonus tracks offered. The first, “Not Now,” was exclusively released on the UK version of blink’s 2003 self-titled album. “Another Girl, Another Planet,” which was recorded by the band as the theme song for MTV’s Meet The Barkers, is the second bonus track. Both fit the band’s mold, with the former definitely having the more mature sound displayed on blink-182.

All in all, this is a solid representation of the band that transcended both punk and alternative rock throughout their tenure together. While a double-CD would have been more fitting, listening to blink at their best only makes one impatiently wonder how long the band will wait before ending their current hiatus and once again take the music world by storm like only they know how.
