After thinking the “boy-band” trend was over, we’re ready to open our arms for Boston-based band, The Click Five. “Greetings From Imrie House” is the title of the debut album from the Lava Records quintet. The record is filled with in-your-face “new school powerpop” within 11 tracks. After opening for Alanis Morissette, Ashlee Simpson, Jesse McCartney and most recently, the Backstreet Boys — The Click Five is ready to take the US by storm.

“Just The Girl” an irresistibly contagious tune, perfectly chosen as the bands first single is powerpop at it’s best. The heart-throbbing band members, Ben Romans, Eric Dill, Joe Guese, Ethan Mentzer and Joey Zehr who you’ll usually find performing in suits — yea we know, very “Beatles,” very classy, are all graduates of the Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA, [with the exception of Dill, who graduated from Purdue] display a mature and impressive sounding pop/rock that is sure to capture the hearts of young females everywhere.

The albums third track “Catch Your Wave,” which was written by band members, Romans, Guese and Mentzer is a catchy, can’t-get-out-of-your-head melody that’s complete with Beach Boys-esque harmonies and up-tempo pop that only a well-crafted group could create. And on the balled, “I’ll Take My Chances,” front-man Dill’s voice is heartfelt and emotional.

Romans is also responsible for penning the infectious and single-worthy “Pop Princess,” about falling in love with what else? A popstar. The Click Five teamed up with fellow musicians Fountains of Wayne and The Cars as well as collaborating with Paul Stanley of Kiss, who co-wrote the perky and cleverly conceived “Angel To You (Devil To Me).” Throughout the CD you find yourself totally locked in and singing along to every track at least by the second chorus.

The albums final track “Say Goodnight,” (also written by Romans) closes the record with a classically sounding arrangement and vocal harmonies that leave you satisfied with an all-around brilliantly debuted album, yet yearning for even more.

To think, with the radio airwaves being filled with FCC restricted hip hop, a handful of actresses turned rockstars and mainstream “punk” bands … they said pop was over. Maybe so. But, powerpop is so in.
