NaturalMeet Orlando-based band Natural …
[L-R: “J” Horn, Patrick King, Michael Johnson, Mark Terenzi, & Ben Bledsoe]

Okay, my first question for you is, how did you guys come together as a band?
Ben:
Well it kind of started out … I moved from California to Orlando just looking into music and acting, Mark moved down from Boston, and we met through friends. Then he met Michael and Patrick at a party and just kind of hung out. I actually met J through my vocal coach, we started working together .. writing, practicing in J’s garage and my living room. It all really started from there, we never looked back .. we were just looking forward to doing anything we could.

How exactly did you come up with the name Natural?
Ben:
Well we were throwing around a bunch of names, and Natural just kept coming up. We play our own instruments, write a lot of our stuff, it’s an international word – we just are who we are.

Who would you consider to be your biggest musical influences? Either individually or as a group?
Patrick:
It depends, individually we have tons of them. They range everywhere from Diana Krall, James Taylor, Lenny Kravitz, Matchbox 20, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Stevie Wonder …
Ben: It could just go on forever, all five of us just have totally different backgrounds.

What’s a typical day like out on the road for you?
Ben:
Wow… I wouldn’t say there’s really an everyday schedule, everything is always a little different. When we’re doing radio promotion, we’ll wake up about 5 in the morning, do a morning show or interview, soundtrack for the show that night and then maybe a little more radio. Sometimes we even split up and do different stuff, generally we don’t even have time for food when we’re doing radio all day long. [laughs]

How do you deal with being away from family and friends while touring?
Patrick:
It’s difficult, but we’re a little use to it by now. To the normal person I’m sure it seems a bit weird. We usually take our cell phones everywhere we go, a lot of calling cards and things like that. It sucks yet is good at times. I mean, there’s always the good and bad to all of it. We love what we do, but unfortunately that’s one of the downsides.

For some, some a song can have many different meanings. In your opinion what exactly is your single “What If” about?
Mark:
So, the song “What If” really just talks about what if the world was different? What if everybody acted together as one person? Like one lyric from the song “if we were one road how far could we travel”. We’ve just seen so much stuff happen … we were in New York on September 11th, about to go to China when SARS broke out, sang for the space shuttle launching. The song just really translates to peoples lives, one way or another. Whether it’s about people you love, the world, or your life in general. Just what if things were different.

Right now, it’s also being used in curriculums in the schools. It’s actually a program called “Rock and Write”, where the kids get the song and interviews of us talking about what we think of the song. Then they discuss what the song means to them, and write their own lyrics. And at the end of all this we’ll be doing five shows where some of the schools can win and come watch us perform as well.

Wow, that’s awesome!
Mark:
Yea, it’s great. You get to see how music really can help people.

What can you tell us about who you’ve been working with and the new material on this album?
Ben:
We’re really proud of this new album. We’ve worked with Richie Supa (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Pink, Ozzy Osbourne), just a lot of great writers and friends of ours.
Mark: This was really great for us, because for me growing up my idols were Aerosmith and Bon Jovi. So, to get to work with Richie Supa is very exciting. He’s an amazing songwriter.

Do you have a title and release date yet?
Mark:
We don’t have a release date in the states yet. It all depends on what’s coming up in these next few months. We’ve been over in Germany a lot, in fact we just got back from there. It’s pretty hard to cover the world, but we plan on doing a bunch of things in the states this year. You should definitely check out our website for what’s coming … Naturalband.com.

NaturalHave you had any more of an input on this album than your last?
Mark:
A lot more, the last record was really about what the label wanted. Our last album was a lot more synthetic pop music, this album is right in-between rock and pop. So, it’s rock music but still pop with five part harmonies, really our own style. We talked a lot about our life experiences, coming up in the industry and just trying to make it. One song “Paradise” is about us all leaving home and going on the road to find our dreams, which we finally did.

Out of the songs you’ve recorded recently, which would you say mean the most to you? Why?
Mark:
I think the whole album in general means a lot to us. Every song is about something in our lives.

How would you say your German and other fans overseas differ from the ones here in America?
Mark:
Umm … you’re allowed to do a lot more at a younger age overseas. Like ten and twelve year old’s are chasing us around the country for a week without parents. It’s crazy.

If the tables were turned and you were interviewing a band, what’s one question you would ask?
Mark:
Wow, that’s actually a good question.
J: I would ask … wait are you going to ask this questions after I say it? I would want to know out of anyone they met in the music industry, which they liked the least.

How do you feel about the term “boy band” and being compared to groups such as Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync?
Mark:
Bands like Backstreet and ‘N Sync are some of the biggest in the world, for us to be compared to them and hopefully achieve some of the success they have would be great. But, we are a boy band … the Beatles, Jackson 5 were boy bands. We play instruments, something different. Is it better? I don’t know, I think that is something for the fans to judge.

So, the last question I have for you is …
Mark:
J is gonna answer the last question for us. [laughs]

Are there any exciting plans/projects coming up that you could tell us about?
J:
[pause] That would be one for Mark to answer, he would know [all laugh]
Mark: Any plans for the future really are about the states. We’ve been spending so much time overseas, that now we want to focus mainly on the United States. We will be touring, “Rock and Write” curriculum in May, and a lot of other things that are just in the works right now. But, if everything goes right with the “Rock and Write” program hopefully it will turn into a 50-state tour in the fall. Not everything is exactly finalized yet. It’s gonna be a good year for us hopefully.

Well, we wish you all the best of luck.
All:
Thank you very much!
