The Spill Canvas

The Spill Canvas is the brainchild of 19 year old Nick Thomas, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His songs stem from emotion and transform late youth angst into brutally honest anthems… with guitar in hand. He speaks for a new generation through his art, while constructing anthems of brutally honest youthful angst. The Spill Canvas is intense, emotionally driven, acoustic guitar rock. Fans of Dashboard Confessional or John Mayer will appreciate Thomas’ work with The Spill Canvas. The debut album, Sunsets and Car Crashes, is slated for an October 21st release on 111 Records. The first single is the track, “The Tide”. Heartache and sadness never sounded so alluring.

How did you come up with the name The Spill Canvas and why?
Well, it was a fairly chance discovery-There wasn’t a real, actual reason for choosing The Spill Canvas. But if I were to pick something that inspired it mildly, I’d have to say that it was this band called Braid, and I was listening to their album “Frame and Canvas”-and it sort of built off that. I chose the name to be in place of my name, Nick Thomas, because I wanted to eventually add a full band, and have lots of other guest musicians jam w/ me, and not feel like they’re playing “under my name”, ’cause their just as much a part of TSC as I am.

How would you describe your music?
Hmmmm, I guess for someone that hasn’t heard it, I’d say it’s acoustic-based rock. It’s kind of hard for me to find a distinct collection of words to describe my music. I’d like to leave that up to the listener, you know? But if I had to try to categorize, I’d say that.

How did the label deal with Brad Fischetti come about?
It’s an interesting story actually-I have been doing Spill Canvas for about 3 years now, and I’ve come across a billion and one little indie labels that were willing to help me out, but I never really felt comfortable with any of them. Then one day my Dad (who helps out a ton with all kinds of TSC stuff) was looking on the internet and stumbled upon the 111 site, and he told me about it. Brad and I started talking, one thing led to another, and here I am!

You’ve been compared to the Dashboard Confessional and John Mayer…what are your feelings on the comparison?
Frankly, I feel honored to be compared to such amazing artists. I mean, to come into this business and have the mindset that you won’t be compared to other artists is ridiculous. In order for new people to hear your music, they want to know what/who you sound like, and that’s where comparison comes in. It’s just all part of the game, you know?

Is there a certain process you go through when writing a song?
Yes, and no. There are some songs that start with a melody floating through my head all day, and then there’s some that start with a basic guitar part, and every once in a while there are some that start with a lyric. Then after the initial start, it’s always different. Sometimes it could take a matter of minutes to complete the song, and other times, it could take months before a song is exactly how I want it.

Have any of your songs, sprung from personal experiences?
Again, yes and no. Some songs don’t follow my life exactly, but for the most part, it’s all very personal. A handful of tunes are about things I wish would happen, or things I can vision happening; while others are verbatim to my life.

Are you excited for the release of your album?
I couldn’t even express the excitement I have for it. I finally have something to show for all this hard work. This time it’s not a little home made demo burned disc-I have a real album, that people can go pick up at their stores. That just blows my mind!

Do you remember your first concert? Who did you see?
I most certainly do. My dad took me to see Rod Stewart in Minneapolis, MN. It was so awesome (from what I can remember!). But I was young, and it went pretty late, and I think I fell asleep to “Maggie”.

Is there a certain artist that’s had a big influence on you?
I’ve said it a billion interviews already, but it’s the truth!-Chris Conley (lead singer/songwriter of Saves the Day) is my idol-that guy can write some of the most amazing songs! But I also think Ben Lee is awesome…..and my new favorite is Damien Rice….damn, he’s talented!

Thank you for taking the time do the interview with us, we wish you the best of luck in the future.
No, thank you. I appreciate all of your help in spreading the word about The Spill Canvas! You guys rule for being so awesome! Thanks again…Nick.
