For an increasingly mundane and redundant pop and R&B music scene, imports are always nice. One such package is the fast talking, trip hopping British superstar Craig David. At just 21 years old, David has risen to mega star status, swooning fanatics closely in tow. Although conquering his homeland was task enough, winning over American fans may prove a bit more tedious.
Even still, amidst a plethora of overused, synthesized skip-beat backings, Craig David is somehow able to breath life into the scatter brained beats and rhythms running rampant throughout his debut album, ‘Born To Do It’. Trip hop, as it is more affectionately called overseas, is David’s weapon of choice, most easily noted on tracks such as ‘Can’t Be Messing ‘Round’, You Know What’, and his first single ‘Fill Me In’.
An overall refreshing R&B vibe is what the listener will take away from this album as David blends smooth vocals with a potent mixture of guitar plucks and computerized taps, repeatedly stepping the lyrical pace up a notch every once in a while, which is just enough to keep the listener interested and wanting more.
Though the album or it’s singles may not be enough to warrant an immediate tidal wave of popularity amongst American music lovers, they should be just enough to spark a ripple effect undoubtedly leading to stateside superstardom.
Standout Tracks: "Fill Me In", "Rendezvous", "Booty Man", "You Know What".
